Growth of the Macedonian electronic communication market

 Electronic communications market in Macedonia, which is worth around 400,000,000 Euros has seen growing in many segments, mainly in the use of mobile telephony and broadband internet, was said by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

According to analysis of Ministry, based on data from the Agency for Electronic Communications and the State Statistical Office, by May this year 1,878,553 persons used mobile phones, which means an internet penetration of 92 percent. Most of them are prepaid users, and the rest are post-paid, which is a growth of 11 percent from early 2008 until the second quarter of this year. If at the beginning of last year the number of pre-paid users was over 78 percent and 22 % of postpaid, in the second quarter of this year's the ratio was 67.6 percent versus 32.4 percent.

As increase is recorded in the use of broadband internet in Macedonia being a leader in the region, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Dragan Simonovski. In 2006 only one percent of Macedonia's population used broadband internet,  in 2007- seven percents and in 2008- 23 percents, whereby at the end of the second quarter of this year that number reached 33.8 percent.

According to the ministry, from the start of the alternative operators in fixed telephony in 2008 to the second quarter of this year the number of residential subscribers in the classical fixed telephony has been reduced. In early 2008 there were 399,975 residential subscribers, and at the end of the second quarter of the year 341,989. If in 2008 there was not even one of the fixed line telephony operating through wireless technology or via cable operators, in the second quarter of this year 37,170 subscribers use fixed lines operating as wireless, and over 6364 households via cable operators.

Ministry of Transport and Communications is pleased with the service number portability. Since the start of the service in September last year to 15 October this year that service was used by 4.674 subscribers in the mobile and 14,334 subscribers in fixed telephony.
According to Simonovski, there is also a steady growth of the number of users of cable television service. There is a growth of 27.25 % of the users of that service in the period from 2008 to the second quarter of this year.

In 2008 there were 119,510 users of cable telephony and the second half of this year that number was 171,117.


- In the recent period several activities have been undertaken including the broadband strategy, as one of the major measures for the approximation to the standards of EU Member States. The electronic services` market has been monitored in every part where it has been noticed that there are opportunities for advancement and increased competition so as to import modern technologies, pointed out the representatives of the  Ministry of Transport.
